Shalini Singh, deputy editor of The Hindu and a former assistant editor with The Times of India, who did stellar reporting on the 2G spectrum and coal allocation scams afflicting the UPA government, has bagged the Prem Bhatia award for political reporting for 2013.

S. Nihal Singh, chairman of the four-member jury that decided on the award, said:

“We were impressed with Shalini Singh’s meticulousness in pursuing a story to its logical conclusion, which is not a quality to be found in many reporters. The whole idea of the award is to recognise journalists who show great promise, and Ms. Singh’s work on the 2G scam, Coalgate and her information-gathering skills made her a fit candidate.”

The award is named after Prem Bhatia, the former editor-in-chief of The Tribune, Chandigarh, who did spells at The Statesman, The Times of India and The Indian Express.

Natasha Badhwar writes on her marriage

It’s okay to have nothing in common with your spouse except love for each other. Photo: Natasha Badhwar “Marriage is the bad cop who keeps us on our toes. Love is the good cop who announces the tea break”

A lovely deconstruction of this Desi Grrlz own marriage that reminded me of my parents and how we grew up around them listening to arguments which today are clear indications of how they were letting their love for each other carry them through the evolution of their personalities. Apologies to Mom and Dad for not getting what it was all about, and being grumpy and dismissive.

About this Desi Grrl: Natasha Badhwar is a film-maker, media trainer and mother of three. She writes a fortnightly column on family and relationships.

Sonal Kapoor’s Heart of Gold – Protsahan

Salute the Sister who was not able to stay inert and watch an 8 year old be prostituted by her mother – meet Sonal Kapoor and her Delhi-based NGO Prosahan.

To Fear, With Love

This young lady is creating a lot of positive change to the people of this nation and the world.

“One day while still working on the shoot Kapoor saw Julie heading towards her mother, barely able to walk. It was at that moment that Kapoor decided she would help Julie and other at-risk girls who live in Delhi’s slums who are often victims of sexual violence and domestic abuse, are forced to work in brothels, or are victims of drug abuse.”

24-year-old Sonal Kapoor of Delhi was not able to stay blinkered to the suffering around her – so she made it her mission to change what she was encountering, and she did it using ‘art, photography, digital stories, and design’.

If you scroll down to the comments you will see the writer’s note that Julie was 8 years old at the time.

Shakuntala Devi (4 Nov 1929- 21 Apr 2013)

Shakuntala Devi

A fascinating account of the life of the late math-genius Shakuntala Devi, fondly known as the Human Computer. One instance of her enhanced thinking was demonstrated on June 18, 1980, where she was asked to multiply two 13-digit numbers 7,686,369,774,870 x 2,465,099,745,779 picked at random by the Computer Department of Imperial College, London. She correctly answered 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 in 28 seconds. This event is mentioned in the 1995 Guinness Book of Records.

Criminal Advertising: Sexist Ford ads in India = Psycho Ford ads

Sorry, but as a fan of Investigative Crime Dramas these ads are nowhere near a joke they’re clearly from the mind of a potential sadist. This person should be sent for psychological profiling. Gil Grissom would be worried, as would the entire team of Criminal Minds.

“One of the ads shows Berlusconi, charged in Italy with paying for sex with a minor, sitting in the front seat of a Ford Figo hatchback flashing a victory sign, with a trio of half-dressed women bound and gagged in the trunk.

Another featured a caricature of celebrity Paris Hilton in the driver’s seat, and three women resembling the Kardashian sisters bound in the trunk with the tagline “Leave your worries behind with Figo’s extra large boot”.”

Female techie fired after tweeting about sexual comments

I kind of disagree with SendGrid CEO Jim Franklin that “Publicly shaming the offenders – and bystanders – was not the appropriate way to handle the situation.”

Good Indian Women, Sex & Hindi Cinema

Well, it has to be re-iterated otherwise it’s challenged or judged. Frankly there’s not much left to do or say about the fact that women feel desire to and men just have to stop going to pieces about that.

It’s a matter of bringing every one on the same page – man and woman – eliminating the shame and fear of ‘what will people think or say’. People who ‘think and say’ stuff about other people well we know what they’re all about – empty in their own lives they sputter on about how they believe other people should live.
